THE CARL ROGERS INSTITUTE

  Student Training...

The Carl Rogers Institute (CRI) provides Master and

Doctoral level students with quality supervised

training. The following opportunities exist for

    graduate student training:

    Diagnostic Practicum training

Students learn to administer, score and interpret

various psychological tests including, but not limited

to, the WAIS, WISC, WIAT, PAI, MMPI, TAT,

Rorschach, various cognitive measure and mental

    status exams.

    Therapy Practicum training

Students learn the discipline of non-directive Client-

Centered therapy. They are taught the meaning and

    importance of Client-Centered empathy, congruence

    and unconditional positive regard.

    Advanced Practicum training

Doctoral students can specialize in advanced

therapy or advanced diagnostic training or both

    during this yearlong training.

    Post-Doctoral Fellowship training

Graduates of clinical psychology doctoral programs

receive supervision while completing their mandatory

hours prior to receiving their license in psychology.

The training includes psychotherapy and diagnostic

testing experience. Fellows are also used as

    secondary supervisors for practicum students.

Supervision

All trainees are supervised by licensed

clinicians. Practicum students receive at least 1

hour of individual supervision weekly from their

primary supervisor, one and a half hours of

group supervision and one hour of supervision

bi-weekly from a secondary supervisor.

Students also participate in a weekly non-

directive encounter group experience.

Programs

There are several specialized training programs

at CRI. Students can elect to

participate in any of these programs or

they can choose not to participate in these

programs at all and simply see a general

clientele. Once a student commits to

participating in either or both of these programs,

they state whether they would like to be involved

with them full-time (2 full days a week) or part-

time (1 day a week or ½ day a week). The

programs include the following.

-The School’s Group project –

Practicum students are assigned to a

Chicago Public elementary, middle or high

    school where they provide psychotherapy

to children within the school. Individual

supervision is provided by an experienced

    school counselor.

-The Health Psychology project –

    Practicum students provide psychotherapy

    and/or diagnostic assessments to a

    medically compromised population. The

    physical conditions seen within this

practice include, but are not limited to, end

    stage renal disease, HIV/AIDS, various

    types of cancers, heart disease,

    infertility and chronic pain conditions.

- Under Served Populations -

Students at the Carl Rogers institute also

have the opportunity to work with people

with mental health needs and few

        resources. People living with substance

        abuse issues and homelessness deserve

access to quality mental health care.

Through the resources of the Carl Rogers

Institute, we help to make this happen.

- The Child Therapy Place -

One of the newer and developing programs

at The New Center and The Carl Rogers

Institute is the play therapy program. This

program utilizes the work of Rogers,

Axeline and Moon among others. Play

       therapy offers the same client-centered

      non-directive attitude to children while

      incorporating a more "age conducive"

environment for the children to explore and

      grow as they choose.
